Zimbabwe in Crisis

When you hear "crisis" and "Africa" in the same sentence these days, what immediately comes to mind?

Probably AIDS?

That's likely because President Bush has done more than any other president in the history of this country to help Africa combat AIDS.  As recently as May of last year he announced a pledged budget of $30 million for this purpose.  Here are the countries on the "focus list", so to speak - the 15 most vulnerable countries to the AIDS crisis (including, as you'll see, countries outside Africa):

Botswana
Cote d'Ivoire
Ethiopia
Guyana
Haiti
Kenya
Mozambique
Namibia
Nigeria
Rwanda
South Africa
Tanzania
Uganda
Vietnam
Zambia

While this is one of the largest humanitarian efforts in the world, Africa is beset by many other problems besides AIDS - which really isn't covered on the nightly news.

The country arguably in the most trouble right now in Africa is not even on the United States' "focus list".  And its major problem is not AIDS.

The country is Zimbabwe.  And the problem is hyper-inflation.

Just this past February, President Robert Mugabe celebrated his 84th birthday with news that inflation in his country had risen above 100,000 percent.

Yes, you read that right.  100,000 percent.

What's Mugabe's solution?  To pander to the "indigenous people of the country" by passing racist legislation that will allow the state to take over both foreign-controlled and white-owned businesses.

Elections in Zimbabwe occur March 29, and nothing to stem the rising hyper-inflation is likely before then.  Or after, for that matter.

With all the hysteria surrounding the AIDS crisis and Darfur, you would think Africa has no other problems.

This is a huge one.

Isn't this kind of crisis exactly the type where the U.N. is supposed to step in?  I couldn't find anything on its website...

Look for more updates around election time...

The Weakest Country in Europe...

Looks like it's Spain:

"Spain's Socialist prime minister won re-election Sunday, as voters dismissed worries about a slumping economy, immigration and resurgent Basque militants to hand him a second term.
" The results were a clear endorsement of Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's record, which includes reforms such as legalizing gay marriage and granting on-demand divorce, once thought unthinkable in this overwhelmingly Roman Catholic country.
"Zapatero also withdrew Spanish troops from Iraq and launched a drive to cede more power to Spain's semiautonomous regions..."

WOW - sounds like Hillary and Obama should start campaigning from Madrid...

Does Hillary Have Time?

The best political "statistician" out there, Michael Barone, weighs in on her momentum after March 4, and if she still has an outside shot at the nomination:

"...the delegate count has changed hardly at all. Three victories in four states with 370 delegates netted Clinton only about a 20-delegate edge, leaving her still about 100 delegates behind....
"...The storyline is changing, too. For the first time in a long campaign cycle, the mainstream media have been pursuing stories that reflect badly on Obama: his close ties and property purchase with Chicago political operator Tony Rezko, now on trial in federal court; his chief economic adviser's purported assurance to a Canadian diplomat that Obama doesn't really mean he'll ditch NAFTA, as he was suggesting in trade-wary Ohio; Obama's pastor's recent award to the man Obama refers to as 'Minister Farrakhan.'
...But Clinton is still about 100 delegates behind, and the Democrats' proportional representation rules make it impossible for her to close the gap in the remaining primaries. Her only plausible path to the nomination is to win a majority of super-delegates (party and public officials) and, perhaps, to reverse the party's decision that disqualified the Michigan and Florida delegations — i.e., overruling the voters in one case, and changing the rules after the game has been played in the other."

Somehow, I don't think "overruling the voters" or "changing the rules" will bother Hillary all that much...

Keep an eye out for stories on what to do with Michigan and Florida, especially after Hillary likely wins Pennsylvania, as the more momentum she has, the more those states will be talked about.  The last thing voters in those two states want is to not be counted, but they also likely don't want to go through the hassle of another election if they have to pay for it...

...I mean, come on - is casting another vote for Hillary or Obama really worth it?

Not Enough Delegates to Go Around...

...priceless, must-read, front page info from CNN.

They can't even be trusted to run an election correctly...and the Dems beat John McCain head-to-head?

Seriously - what is wrong with people?

More from Michelle...

"'...we’re a divided country, we’re a country that is 'just downright mean,' we are 'guided by fear,' we’re a nation of cynics, sloths, and complacents. 'We have become a nation of struggling folks who are barely making it every day,' she said, as heads bobbed in the pews. 'Folks are just jammed up, and it’s gotten worse over my lifetime. And, doggone it, I’m young. Forty-four!'"

Yes, she's talking about the United States of America.  The most industrious people the world has ever seen are a bunch of "sloths" and "complacents"...

This woman insults me.  The quick argument is to just tell her to shut up because she doesn't know what she's talking about.

I'd rather she keep talking.  Maybe exposing their downright socialist agenda will convince enough voters that this Obama tidal wave needs to slow down...

...or, better yet, come to a screeching halt.

She's been a fixture there for 14 years, but vows to continue her activism:

"Morgan’s on-air activism included an effort that removed the carcinogen MTBE from gasoline in California, launching of the historic Recall Gray Davis campaign that led to the election of Arnold Schwarzenegger as Governor of California, and co-founding the nation’s largest pro-troop organization, Move America Forward."

Her website is here.  Her fantastic organization, Move America Forward, is here.

Wish her the best...

Harvard Dhimmitude

Female Muslim students at Harvard have asked for women-only hours at one of its campus gyms.  Naturally, the administration complied.

"Harvard excuses the defacto segregation of women by saying the women want it that way. Let's hope the alumni recognize the horror of this precedent and demand its reversal. As for the few Muslim women at Harvard who demanded the civilized world adapt to the misogyny they have accepted in their lives, they can join one of the many 'women only' gyms out there."

More Dhimmitude from the Dutch

From the country that brought you "Christian Ramadan" comes this:

"Knorbert the piglet has been dropped as the mascot of Fortis Bank after it decided to stop giving piggy banks to children for fear of offending Muslims....
"...Lilian Tackaert, a spokeswoman, said that Knorbert had reached the natural end of his product life cycle. “The piglet was indeed being given to children opening a savings account but we ran out of stock, although some branches still had some,” she said. “Now we are looking for something else.”

Looks like Ms. Tackaert is already familiar with the practice of taqiya as it apparently spreads through the Netherlands...

(via Atlas Shrugs - as she says, you can't make this stuff up!)

The Catholic Vote

Ramesh Ponnuru at National Review:

"...(Barack) Obama himself may be perfectly sincere in willing that fewer women exercise the (supposed) right to abortion even while he supports keeping that option legal and making it subsidized. I have no reason to doubt that he is. But he also wills that unborn children be denied the basic legal protection from homicide that you and I enjoy. The Catholic Church wants voters to take that injustice seriously..."

Obama on Illegals

Proving that he just doesn't get it:

"...Comprehensive immigration reform is something that I have worked on extensively.
"Two years ago, we were able to get a bill out of the Senate. I was one of the group of senators that helped to move it through, but it died in the House this year. Because it was used as a political football instead of a way of solving a problem, nothing happened.  (CH: Nothing happened because the bill would've accomplished nothing.)
"And so there are a couple of things that I would just add to what Senator Clinton said.
"Number one, it is absolutely critical that we tone down the rhetoric (CH: cue Linda Chavez) when it comes to the immigration debate, because there has been an undertone that has been ugly.
"Oftentimes, it has been directed at the Hispanic community.  (CH: ummm...that's because they have the largest percentage of illegals in this country) We have seen hate crimes skyrocket in the wake of the immigration debate as it has been conducted in Washington, (CH: where is the proof for that?) and that is unacceptable.
"We are a nation of laws and we are a nation of immigrants, and we can reconcile those two things. So we need comprehensive reform...
"... we need comprehensive reform, and that means stronger border security. It means that we are cracking down on employers that are taking advantage of undocumented workers because they can't complain if they're not paid a minimum wage. (CH: why should they be able to?  This is the first time I've heard a presidential candidate say that illegals are being taken advantage of in this country.  If they don't like it, they can go home.)
"They can't complain if they're not getting overtime. Worker safety laws are not being observed.
"We have to crack down on those employers, although we also have to make sure that we do it in a way that doesn't lead to people with Spanish surnames being discriminated against, so there's got to be a safeguard there.
"We have to require that undocumented workers, who are provided a pathway to citizenship, not only learn English, pay back taxes and pay a significant fine, but also that they're going to the back of the line, so that they are not getting citizenship before those who have applied legally, (CH: what's the point of "citizenship" if you don't make them leave the country?) which raises two last points.
"Number one, it is important that we fix the legal immigration system, because right now we've got a backlog that means years for people to apply legally.
"And what's worse is, we keep on increasing the fees, so that if you've got a hard working immigrant family, they've got to hire a lawyer; they've got to pay thousands of dollars in fees. They just can't afford it. And it's discriminatory against people who have good character, we should want in this country, but don't have the money. So we've got to fix that.
"So we've got to fix that.
"The second thing is, we have to improve our relationship with Mexico and work with the Mexican government so that their economy is producing jobs on that side of the border. (CH: they don't have to improve their relationship with us???  Why is the onus always on the U.S.?  Oh and by the way, we are helping them - with their southern border.)
"And the problem that we have...
"The problem that we have is that we have had an administration that came in promising all sorts of leadership on creating a U.S.- Mexican relationship. And, frankly, President Bush dropped the ball. He has been so obsessed with Iraq that we have not seen the kinds of outreach and cooperative work that would ensure that the Mexican economy is working not just for the very wealthy in Mexico, but for all people. And that's as policy that I'm going to change when I'm president of the United States."

I'm glad Obama's going to help the Mexican economy when he becomes president of the United States.  Really, I am.

Could anyone be more dangerous for our country?
